This might suck, but I think it was needed...

Before I launched a #Friendica #server, I looked for a #demo on the system to see if I would like it better than Diaspora or other options. I couldn't find such a video so today I finally made my own. I know I have technical issues and it was an unplanned wandering through, but hopefully, I get others to make better ones.

What I dislike about the federation

I have been noticing since a while there is a very impolite attitude among many people who use the federated networks, the lacking of desire to build a community that include all the other ones from all the different countries and languages.

Many times I see posts that starting in English which is the most common ground to communicate among the others that end filled up in any others languages than English, along the fact that is unkindly and annoying, it goes in the opposite way of the inclusion which should be the reason why a social network exists.

It is true that Mastodon resolved it brilliantly but in Diaspora and Friendica you can't exclude topics because the language that means is up to the users take the task to avoid cross languages in any topic.

However I see there isn't any desire to avoid that behavior and people are quite careless about that, hence I think I will start to ignore all the people that do not respect this very simple, unwritten and basic rule.

I have people sign up to my #Friendica server from time to time, maybe 1-3 users a week on average. But there is only a few public posts at all. Some users, at least according to /admin/users/ did post something, but if I go to their profile there is nothing there.
This really tricks me out. I can't stop to wonder if there actually post something or if Friendica just shows that they did?

I did do a test signup some time ago to check the email is sent and I receive it on the test email address, this worked.

Also I have some, rare cases, of users posting some spam and out of the 60 users I have even 10 or so with public post (some again to me seem to be spamming) and mostly only 1 or 2 posts per user are there.

I think is is not really worth the effort to run the server if there is no real users posting things.

I switched mordor.social to Friendica's develop branch (2019.06-dev).
And I changed the config files to the latest PHP array style. This worked fine except that I broke the 'redis' configuration. 😂 #fixed

We all wonder how large the open and free social media "federation" --- aka the Fediverse -- really is. This post gives you an indication of places where there seems no detectable presence of servers running fediverse social media protocols.

These snapshots are a graphical representation of countries with servers (or their proxies) that my nodes has interacted with in some form. My node is an open node (with a relatively small number of users by Friendica standards), but has been running for several years.

Please share your thoughts: Cleanup friendica header structure

    Wilhelm - 2019-03-23 11:29:50 GMT
    @Friendica Support
I would like to gather some feedback on a #design proposal to cleanup #friendica headers. If this is the wrong forum please hint me in the correct direction, but as both developers and users read the support forum I think it's a good fit.

Below find two images a) currently b) proposal.

    Things to think about:

    1. let's get rid of the secondary header menu: I think two header menubars are confusing, overwhelming for new users, uncommon on other social networks (for obvious reasons) and provide littele benefit on the pro side of things.
1.1 new post could move to the left column, text should be added and the button increased - it's the most important function of a social network after all, right?
1.2 sorting: currently Commented Order, Posted Order, Personal, Starred are shown. I don't think it's a common use case to switch between those a lot. depending on what the consensus is here those options could a) be moved to the settings or b) added to the top menu as dropdown to save space and have less user facing options.
1.3 I know forums are displayed in the secondary header, that info could also be moved to the left column where it would fit quite nicely
    2. comparing the design, note how much cleaner the overall layout appears. that has partly to do with the fact that the secondary header menu is poorly layouted and sticks out like a wrong UI element, this is solved by removing the second menubar.

What are your thoughts on this?

@Vladimir Dear @Paul Sutton , @Tobias , and all the others around. I've sent the following text and link to the newhere I follow in the languages I use (EN, FR, ES, IT):

Welcome to you and greetings from #Friendica in the Fediverse. If you're interested you may find very basic information about decentralised social network HERE

The few feedback I got, tell me it is useful to them also because it is so easy to access.
I must say that I the ratio new d\* vs new Friendica is not in favor of Friendica despite we are a few ones to promote our network in FB and in G+ predominantly.
I don't have a github account and not planning to open one. Maybe because I don't understand it use.

@Vladimir thank you for answering my questions and helping me with the switch to #Friendica

No, as far as I know there are no bridges to FB or TW in #Friendica nor in d*.

    Woohoo! team #Friendica is amazing!!!

Unrelated but I found it odd that the language addon filtered this as French... does it consider the girl in the red dress to be French? j/k :P

    Decentralised & Free Social Networks

For those who are #newhere from other social networks, here’s a bit of handy vocabulary to #help you navigate this new social network universe:

    - Protocol - An agreed format that enables software applications to communicate with (or “federate” with) each other. The two most heavily used protocols around here are Diaspora and ActivityPub. As an end user, you don’t have to care about the protocol you are using and you don’t ever see the “protocol” other than it enables or limits which users you can see.
Nevertheless, be aware that currently not all the platforms (see this word later) are fully compatible and limit you in the possibility of interactions.
    Bild/Foto

    - Platform - The software application that implements a protocol(s) for federating. The Diaspora platform implements the eponymously named Diaspora protocol. Mastodon, for example, implements the ActivityPub protocol. #Friendica implements both the Diaspora and the ActivityPub protocols.

    - Server - pod - instance - node - The server(s) running a particular platform (software application). The variability in naming is due to the various origins of these platforms now working to intercommunicate.
For example, pluspora.com is one of the many pods running the Diaspora platform; mastodon.social is one of the many pods running the Mastodon platform; and libranet.de is one of the many pods running the Friendica platform.

    - The Federation - The collective of servers running platforms that implement the Diaspora protocol. This includes all servers running Diaspora (the software application), Hubzilla, Friendica, or Socialhome. The users on *any* of these pods can connect to and interact with each other.

    - The Fediverse - The collective of servers running platforms that implement the ActivityPub (and OStatus) protocols. This includes all servers running Mastodon, Pixelfed, Hubzilla, Friendica, Socialhome, or many, many others. The users on *any* of these servers can connect to and interact with each other.

    - The Free Network - The collective of pods in The Federation and The Fediverse, combined.

Hope that helps and doesn’t make this seem more complicated than it actually is. The main difference from other social networks is that no single entity owns and runs a platform. On G+ or Facebook, you are locked into that platform/company to talk to other users. In the Free Network, one set of volunteers writes the software and puts it out there for free, and another set of volunteers downloads the software and runs it on their servers and invites us to have user accounts for free. (But you should definitely donate to help them with the costs, if you can.) If we, as users, decide we aren’t happy with our current experience, we can change platforms or pods and still keep all of our friends/connections. On Facebook, G+, Twitter, and the like, you are locked in; and if you want leave, you go cold turkey.

Glad you joined us here in the land of choice.

A help for the wave of newcomers to come

    Vladimir - 2019-03-17 11:10:00 GMT
    @Friendica Support

    Dear All,
once upon a time I've been a G+ refugee and have been so happy to be kindly welcomed in Friendica and the instance which I now reside.
Yet I spent much time in finding my way and realise after I landed on d\* that Friendica was more interesting for me. So I though after @alysonsee (Fca) that putting together a sort of welcome text encompassing some basic jargon would be a good thing.
Here is the text I'm planning to provide to any newcomer I see. Let me know how to improve it keeping in mind the following criteria :
    1. public is non geek lambda user
    2. quick so that the user has the impression he receives the keys in an A4 page max

    3. allow me to favorise #Friendica for its flexibility and connexion with the Free Network.

    Reporting, Blocking instances/pods, etc.

So, what's the overall status of tools to deal with bad people here in #Friendica?

You can block individual profiles, which is good, but can we, the users, have an option to block entire instances like you can in #Mastodon? For example, I'd _really_ like to block the share.naturalnews.com pod, since it's apparently a hub for conspiracy theorists and bigots. Also, is there anything that's close to a report feature? How do I report posts and profiles? There are literal nazis jerking it to swatikas and I see nowhere to report it so that it gets removed and no one else has to deal with it.

I understand that Friendica is free-software and entirely run by volunteers, so it's fine if these features are not here _yet_, but on the other hand, the lack of these features might be intentional, which, if true, really sucks.

    Wilkommen/Welcome

    Hi @Eduardo Thomas

    Hastags

Here a few Tipps, how one writes best the first contribution. It is good to insert the Hashtag "newhere" thus #newhere in the first contribution. In addition still another small text, for example so:

    Hastags

    Hello I am #newhere and am interested in #Friendica, #Android, #Privacy, #Networks and #Dogs and like #Paddling.

This post will then be distributed to other servers if it is a public post. Hashtags will help other users with the same interests to find your post. In this way you get to know new people with the same interests and a little activity is added to your #Timeline. Basically, this works with every post you make, #Tags help a lot with #networking.

After submitting the post, you can also follow the tags directly by clicking on them and saving them with the plus sign in the upper right corner. You can also search for other #Hastags using the search field (above) and save each search exactly the same way. By saving the search, this server requests posts with these tags from other servers and these will appear in your #Network bar.

    Mentioning

With the @ sign you can address users directly. Add @username@domain to your post and the one will get a notification that he was mentioned in a post.

    Share

If you want to share other websites quickly on meld.de you can use the code at the end of the post, save it as #bookmark and click on the website you want to share. There will be a popup window where you have to enter your #Pod address, that would be meld.de, save the pod and you can already share the currently visited website on meld.de.

Posting RSS/Atom feed into own feed

    ♲ Christian Kalkhoff (softmetz@social.softmetz.de):
    @Friendica Support

When I used #friendica for the last time I had a script, that posted my RSS feed into my profile's feed.

Now I added my atom feed to my network and can even repost the entries.

But is there a suggested way to have the entries posted into my personal feed?

I get Installing dependencies from lock file Warning: The lock file is not up to date with the latest changes in composer.json. You may be getting outdated dependencies. Run update to update them.

when I run my usual update. Do I need to do anything or is this anything to worry about?
